September seems to be the Social Media Month.

Last Thursday, September 9, SAO and SMCPDX co-sponsored a talk by Richard Boly, the head of eDiplomacy at the U.S. State Department. It turned out the original plan for a keynote and panel held at the Multnomah Club was ambitious, the event quickly became less formal and was held at Ringler’s Pub instead.

Panel Debates Online Privacy Existence

About 50 souls bravely traipsed to Webtrends after work on the first day of summer and they were rewarded with stimulating discussion and great Widmer Brothers beer.

Our panel was moderated by John Hartman(Evergreen Branded Media, @feedia), and included Aaron Hockley (Hockley Photography, @ahockley), Amanda Mayhew (Ethics Point), Christina Avrevalo (IDExperts), and Marshall Kirkpatrick (RWW, @marshallk) as participants. You can read more about them in our earlier post .

The meeting ran about 1.5 hours, longer than epxected, and people were still asking questions one on one after the panel ended. The range of subjects covered was wide but some of the discussion surrounded:

  • Privacy versus ID protection (anonymity)
  • Conflating online privacy and ID protection
  • The inability to anonymize data/the ability to de-anonymize data (a’la the AOL record fiasco)
  • OpenID
  • OAuth
  • Corporate privacy policies
  • Web services privacy policies
  • Recent research demonstrating young people acre as much as older people about privacy
  • European versus American concepts of privacy
  • Privacy paranoia

Is There Any Online Privacy? June 21st SMC Meeting

Privacy online is the hot topic of the day….er, month….well, at least the last year and maybe since Scott McNealy declared privacy dead in 1999. Privacy has been on the losing end of the stick ever since. Mark Zuckerberg said essentially the same thing in January 2010 and Apple/ATT have made a privacy mess with their new iPad, exposing names and account information on highly placed politicians and celebrities. Even Steve Jobs is taking a whack at redefining privacy.

Our panel on June 21 has the experience to give us a view from four different perspectives. They’ve spent years working and living online in one form or another.

  • Marshall Kirkpatrick follows tech subjects from ReadWriteWeb and has a distinct take on the privacy issue after covering how the industry struggles with the idea.
  • Aaron Hockley lives part of his life online, especially the growing business part that includes Hockley Photography, and can give us a complete view of how privacy hides and exposes a growing business operation.
  • Christine Arevalo will give us the view from ID Experts, a company built to prevent and repair data breaches for individuals and families, and companies in healthcare, financial services and other industries, as well as government agencies and universities in the public sector.

She has a B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration and has completed an Executive MS in Economic Crime Management. During her career at ID Experts, Christine has become very active in the legislative world of Information Security, and has worked hard in the drafting of bills that push for greater protection of PII and PHI. Her most notable work was with Oregon Senate Bill 583 which now makes breach notification a requirement. Christine has extensive experience in data breach and identity theft concepts, practices, and procedures; including victim restoration, risk assessment, data breach laws and compliancy issues affecting each client breach.

Amanda Mayhew currently serves as General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Privacy officer of EthicsPoint, Inc. In this capacity, she advises the organization on a variety of matters including international data privacy and security, intellectual property, and general corporate matters. Amanda is currently serving as President of the Oregon Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar’s Intellectual Property Section and is a board member of FrOLIO (Friends of Opportunities for Law In Oregon).
