Our panel was moderated by John Hartman(Evergreen Branded Media, @feedia), and included Aaron Hockley (Hockley Photography, @ahockley), Amanda Mayhew (Ethics Point), Christina Avrevalo (IDExperts), and Marshall Kirkpatrick (RWW, @marshallk) as participants. The meeting ran about 1.5 hours, longer than epxected, and people were still asking questions one on one after the panel ended. The range of subjects covered was wide but some of the discussion surrounded:

• Privacy versus ID protection (anonymity)
• Conflating online privacy and ID protection
• The inability to anonymize data/the ability to de-anonymize data (a’la the AOL record fiasco)
• OpenID
• OAuth
• Corporate privacy policies
• Web services privacy policies
• Recent research demonstrating young people acre as much as older people about privacy
• European versus American concepts of privacy
• Privacy paranoia

Updated 6/26/2010, 22:26 BREAKING NEWS: Twitter and FTC settle security charges. The FTC didn’t like the way Twitter handled users’ private data, new rules are in place and operations will be reviewed bi-annually for next ten years.

Aaron Hockley creates photographs, memories, and stories using a photojournalistic style. While he explores all areas of photography, his focus is on imagery of the events, people, and facilities that drive businesses of all sizes. In addition to creating his own photographs, Aaron is a writer, speaker, and podcaster who helps photographers use new media and social media to better market themselves and their work.

Christine Arevalo, Director, Critical Incident Response Team, ID Experts
Director of Critical Incident Response, Christine Arevalo, has been with ID Experts for over seven years and is a founding employee. She has a B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration and has completed an Executive MS in Economic Crime Management. During her career at ID Experts, Christine has become very active in the legislative world of Information Security, and has worked hard in the drafting of bills that push for greater protection of PII and PHI. Her most notable work was with Oregon Senate Bill 583 which now makes breach notification a requirement. Christine has extensive experience in data breach and identity theft concepts, practices, and procedures; including victim restoration, risk assessment, data breach laws and compliancy issues affecting each client breach.

Amanda Mayhew, Corporate Secretary, General Counsel and Privacy Officer from EthicsPoint
Amanda Mayhew currently serves as General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Privacy officer of EthicsPoint, Inc. In this capacity, she advises the organization on a variety of matters including international data privacy and security, intellectual property, and general corporate matters. Amanda is currently serving as President of the Oregon Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar’s Intellectual Property Section and is a board member of FrOLIO (Friends of Opportunities for Law In Oregon). She is past Chair of the Oregon State Bar’s Affirmative Action Committee and is a member of the following organizations: International Association of Privacy Professionals, the Oregon Minority Lawyers Association and the OSB Computer and Internet Law, Corporate Counsel and Intellectual Property Sections. Amanda is a Certified Information Privacy Professional and is licensed to practice in the  states of Oregon and Washington.

Aaron Gray, Principal and Owner of Greater Returns, helps companies use web measurement and optimization tools and processes to drive measurable improvements in marketing and business performance.  A veteran in the space, Aaron has held key roles at multiple analytics software companies, including Coremetrics and Webtrends, driving measurement and optimization efforts for organizations like AT&T, Bank of America, Alltel, Mastercard, Fujitsu, HSBC, Logitech, Orbitz, American Eagle Outfitters, ThomsonReuters, Internet Broadcasting, Kmart, SkyMall, and more.

In 2000, Aaron founded Tweak Interactive, an interactive strategy and design business focused on great customer experiences.  At Tweak, Aaron developed and tested site strategies and interaction models for both emerging and established brands.  It was at Tweak where Aaron first discovered the power of data to drive site design optimizations, leading to better business performance of the site. Aaron has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.

Margaret Francis is VP Product at Scout Labs, leading development of the social media insight & collaboration platform. As former Director of Strategy at Razorfish, Ms. Francis developed marketing and technology strategies for Fortune 500 companies and led cross-functional teams to deliver cutting edge web sites and digital marketing programs.  Her clients have included major brands such as Visa, Nike, JC Penney, Apple, Palm and BP. She is a graduate of Yale University and SFAI.

Chase Reeves is the director of marketing at Iterasi, Inc., a provider of web page and web presence archiving products. Chase has been working online for six years and has experience in product management, web strategy, reputation management, web design and development, and email marketing. He currently lives in Portland, OR with his wife Mellisa and son Aiden.

Justin Kistner has developed social media marketing programs for companies like HP, Intel, and Jive Software. Currently he is the Sr. Manager of Social Media Marketing at Webtrends. In his spare time, Justin has served on the Board of Directors for Artists for the Arts and Legion of Tech. He is also the founder of Beer & Blog.
