One of the coolest aspects of living and working in Portland is the close proximity to so many top-notch technology companies like Webtrends who graciously hosted last month’s meeting of the Social Media Club of Portland. Next week we are lucky to benefit from another local company’s presence, this time in the form of a Tweetup. On Thursday, April 16 Intel will host a visit by several “Intel Insiders.” These folks are literally the who’s who in social media and technology and they’ll be in P-town checking out Intel’s tech and touring their fabs and research centers. As a special bonus, they’ll be heading downtown in the evening to join several folks from Social Media Club PDX at The Green Dragon Pub for chit-chat and beer.

Who are these so called Insiders? Well below is a list with links to their respective web properties:

Sarah Austin from POP17 @pop17

Irina Slutsky Geek Entertainment @irinaslutsky & producer/videographer Eddie Codel eddie.com @ekai

”Somewhat” Frank Gruber Somewhat Frank @frankgruber

Tom Foremski Silicon Valley Watcher @tomforemski

Cathy Brooks – Other Than That @cathybrooks

Sweet, huh? Join your fellow Portland Social Media Peeps on Thursday, April 16 from 7:30 to 8:30 for a Tweetup at the Green Dragon. And if the notoriety of these Insiders isn’t enough to spark your interest, Intel will provide the first round of beers (depending on how many people show up). We hope to see you there!

If you’re looking for more information on the Intel Insiders, here are some related blog posts:

Once again PDX does not disappoint! Thank you to all who were able to come out and spend your time with us at the second Social Media Club PDX event. It was a wonderful event, packed to the brim (I lost count) with people from all different industries looking to learn or share how social media can help businesses. And how there is a business need to fill positions to build a brand presence online and engage/listen to their consumers.

A big thank you to Intel’s diva of social media, Kelly Feller, for presenting. We will be putting up a link to her slideshow once she removes some of the legaleze from the deck. Follow us on twitter @socialmediapdx for updates.

Until then, you can read Intel’s Social Media Guidelines, which Ms. Feller helped create, or follow her on twitter @kellyrfeller.

One of the attendees, William Hertling, wrote up detailed notes on the talk for those of you who may have missed the event. Thank you, William.

Webtrends was amazingly gracious to us. The soda and free books, as well as the space were all compliments of Webtrends. Be sure to read on their blog about what they are working on for social media analytics. The beers, lest we forget, were compliments of Widmer Brothers.

And don’t forget to take the small things challenge where intel will donate on your behalf to Kiva and Save the children.

With all the self-proclaimed social media pundits, experts & gurus out there, it’s easy to wonder if the only jobs in social media are for consultants or agencies trying to help big corporations “get it.” Well Kelly is living proof that some big companies do “get it” and are willing to put their money where their online mouths are by hiring specialists with expertise at “being social online.”

Join Kelly Feller for the second official Social Media Club Portland meeting where she’ll summarize various corporate social media jobs (hers included) & what they actually entail, explore ways to stand out in this increasingly crowded space, and give some hints to agencies & consultants who are helping companies make sense of the growing social media marketing trend.

About Kelly Feller
After having been in “traditional” marketing roles for the last 15 years, Kelly Ripley Feller is now a social media addict and outspoken (read “loud”) proponent of change and marketing evolution. She has marketed everything from organic foods and senior housing to infrared thermometers and computer software & hardware. She’s worked with a variety of big technology companies including Intel, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Intuit, SAS Software, Symantec, and IBM and even some smaller companies & non-profits.

Today she is a Social Media Strategist in Intel’s Social Media Center of Excellence where she works on company-wide guidelines & programs that involve social media marketing. In her dwindling spare time she writes & Twitters avidly about technology, social media, marketing, business, politics, and Second Life—where she’s been active for over two years. To prove she isn’t just a geeky chick, Kelly is also an enthusiastic live music lover, Phishead, and classical singer who performs at local schools and senior homes. She holds a BA in Communications and Political Science from the University of Michigan.

Wow. What an amazing turnout for our very first event. We had nearly 100 people crammed into a room that was certainly not meant to hold that many. It was great to see so many people interested in learning and sharing ideas about social media. Despite some technical difficulties we experienced, there was some interesting debate and great conversation.

We are in the midst of planning our next event and will let you know as soon as we set a date. We’re looking at possibly doing more of a round-table format or even inviting people to present their social media case study. If you have ideas for what you’d like to see at these events, please free free to email us or leave a comment.

Special thanks to Chris Heuer for making the stop in Portland to present, and The Agency Ultra Sport Lounge for allowing us to use their venue.

(We are also actively seeking sponsors for these events! please email us if you are interested.)

-Erin
